Yoga On The Water

An outdoor yoga series that transformed a highly visible public space into an accessible, welcoming site for collective well-being.

Yoga on the Water was a seasonal wellness initiative designed in partnership with Mysfit Club to bring mindfulness, movement, and community to Halifax’s scenic waterfront. Hosted weekly from May to September, the outdoor series transformed a highly visible public space into an accessible, welcoming site for collective well-being.

In a fast-paced urban environment, Yoga on the Water offered a consistent opportunity to pause. By situating guided yoga classes in a prime waterfront location, the series increased visibility for community wellness while reducing barriers to participation. People of all ages, experience levels, and backgrounds gathered for peaceful, instructor-led sessions in an environment that prioritized inclusion, safety, and joy.

Each class was facilitated by carefully selected local instructors, ensuring high-quality instruction while also investing in and amplifying regional wellness practitioners. The multi-week structure fostered continuity and relationship-building, allowing participants to return consistently and build connection over time.

The series was intentionally designed with accessibility at its core. Classes were donation-based, eliminating financial barriers while maintaining a shared sense of collective contribution. No prior yoga experience was required, and sessions were structured to accommodate a range of mobility levels and comfort levels. By hosting the program in a public, high-traffic location, Yoga on the Water also reached individuals who may not otherwise have sought out studio-based wellness programming.

From a wellness perspective, participants described the series as grounding, energizing, and community-building. Beyond individual impact, the initiative contributed to broader public well-being by activating outdoor civic space in a positive, health-centered way. It demonstrated how public environments can be used to foster connection, reduce isolation, and normalize accessible mental and physical wellness practices.

Through Yoga on the Water, Mauya reinforced its commitment to prevention-focused health promotion, equitable access to wellness resources, and community-driven programming that met people where they were - both literally and figuratively.
