MAUYA
Mauya means “You are welcome” in Shona.
This word reflects the heart of everything we do. Mauya exists to create spaces where people feel invited, seen, and safe to show up as they are. Whether someone is new to a city, reconnecting with themselves, or simply seeking community, Mauya is an open door—a place to gather, create, and belong.

Through creative workshops, gatherings, and cultural programming, we support personal growth, collective healing, and meaningful community connection, particularly for equity-deserving communities and newcomers.

Creativity with Purpose
We use art to tell stories, spark healing, and hold space.
Play & Exploration
We make room for play as a tool for healing, connection, and self-expression. Adults deserve joy, wonder, and the freedom to explore, too, and our experiences are designed to awaken that inner spark.
Community-Centered
We uplift voices and experiences that are often unseen, especially within racialized and marginalized communities. We lead with cultural integrity and care.
Collaboration
We build together, learn together, and grow together. No idea is too small, and no role is too big when it comes to creating something meaningful.
Mauya's JOURNEY
Rooted in Community (2022)
Mauya began with a single painting session bringing together 24 people in Halifax. This first gathering revealed a strong need for accessible, creative spaces rooted in care, expression, and community connection.
Creative Care in Action (2022–2023)
Early grant support helped Mauya launch initiatives focused on mental health and well-being, including our first Men’s Mental Health Brunch and access to free therapy for participants—demonstrating how creativity can meaningfully support community care.
Recognition & Growth (2023–2024)
Mauya’s work gained wider visibility through a CTV News feature and recognition as a finalist for New Business of the Year at the Halifax Chamber of Commerce Business Awards, alongside opportunities to refine our storytelling and leadership through pitch competitions.
Building for the Future (2025–Present)
After four years of community-based work, Mauya formally incorporated as a non-profit organization, expanded its internal capacity through mentorship and internships, and invested in sustainable systems to support long-term community impact.
