Unplugged Mondays

A recurring community gathering designed to strengthen emotional literacy, belonging, and peer connection.

Unplugged Mondays is a signature Mauya program that creates intentional space for young people and community members to slow down, reflect, and connect offline. In a culture that often rewards emotional suppression and constant productivity, Unplugged Mondays models a different approach: one rooted in presence, vulnerability, and collective care.

Each gathering blends facilitated reflection, storytelling, guided prompts, music, and structured social connection in an atmosphere that is both welcoming and psychologically safe. Themes vary month to month, from identity and relationships to grief, ambition, joy, and “big feelings”, but the core objective remains the same: to normalize emotional expression and build relational resilience.

The initiative was intentionally designed to remove common barriers to participation: there is no cost to attend, no requirement for prior performance experience, and no expectation to “perform perfectly.” This makes the space particularly welcoming to equity-seeking and underserved communities, including Black, Indigenous, and emerging artists, as well as individuals who may not otherwise feel safe or confident sharing their voices in traditional arts venues.

From a wellness perspective, participants regularly describe the space as grounding, affirming, and healing. The program also strengthens community well-being by transforming existing physical spaces into warm, inclusive gathering places where people feel seen, heard, and supported.
